Baking for Your Dog with Cú Bakery

I’m always looking for new, easy (emphasis on EASY) recipes to try for Henry. If you read my blog post about our transition to Faim Museau raw dog food, you’ll know how much I love simple, no-hassle prep! Cooking is not really my thing, but baking, I do enjoy. In my opinion, with baking it’s a lot harder to mess something up. When instructions and ingredients are as easy as Cú Bakery’s Snacúm apple, sweet potato and oat muffins, it’s impossible to make any mistakes. This was a fun little way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Henry was excited to smell all the smells coming from the kitchen, and he definitely enjoyed his muffin!

Baking for Your Dog Made Easy: Snacúms Bakery Kits

I love the idea of baking kits for dogs. I’ve searched high and low for dog treat recipes on Pinterest, but I’ve always found that the recipes are always too complicated, include ingredients I wouldn’t give Henry or just don’t have items that I would already have at home. I like that Cú Bakery does that part of the job for you. This Toronto-based company offers a variety of baking kits: mini cakes, cookies, muffins, pancakes and ice pops. You can see the selection here. They sell exclusively through Big Country Raw, that’s where we ordered ours. I was also drawn to them because they use “100% natural and nutritious human-grade ingredients”, as indicated on their website, and they leave out “any common human baking ingredients like sugars, salt, gluten and leavening agents”. We’re very careful about what Henry eats, so this was very reassuring.

Baking for Your Dog: Getting Started

Any time I bake, I make it my mission to make the least amount of mess as possible. What’s great about these baking kits is that they don’t require a million bowls. It’s literally a 1-bowl, 3-step thing. Fabulous!

In terms of tools, here’s what you’ll need (I’ve linked them all to Amazon, in case you’re missing anything):

These muffins already come with three packages of dry ingredients: 1. peanut powder 2. oat flour, sweet potato, cinnamon and oats and 3. apple. You also get cute little oats for topping.

In terms of added ingredients, you’ll only need:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/8 cup of oil (either olive, sunflower or coconut oil)
  • 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce, plain yogurt or mashed banana.

We went with coconut oil and unsweetened applesauce. In fact, our friends at Billiebone gave us their home-made all-natural, organic, unsweetened applesauce they use for their delicious treats. I snuck a taste, and there’s nothing like it! So tasty!

Baking for Your Dog As Easy As 1, 2, 3!

Included in the Snacúm Baking kit are step-by-step instructions for putting it all together. They are very clear and easy to follow. I would say it took me a total of 10 minutes to mix all the ingredients together and pop it in the oven. I would suggest putting the batter in a Ziploc bag and “piping” it into the muffin pan, to keep things tidy. If you’re feeling confident (like I was!) you can also just pour the batter from the bowl into the pans, and use the spatula to guide it along.

Piping bag hack: if you don’t actually have any piping bags, put the plastic bag in a mug, folding the bag over the edge of the mug (like putting a garbage bag into a garbage bin) and pour the batter into the bag in the cup. Then you grab the bag out of the cup, and cut the corner of the Ziploc.

From here, we put it in the oven and set a timer for 25-28 minutes. Any time I cook anything, my number one fear is the middle of whatever I’m making is not cooked through. At around 22 minutes, I stayed in front of my oven to make sure the edges were browning, but not too much! I took the muffins out once to make sure they were “firm to the touch”, as the instructions indicate. I also stuck a fork in one, just to be sure they were baked through. At around 26-27 minutes, they were done!

DIY Treats Your Dog Will Love!

Not going to lie, I may have been baking for my dog, but it just smelled so good I had to taste it. Not bad! Would they be my go-to snack? Probably not. They’re definitely too bland for humans, but Henry could smell them from miles away. After letting them cool and taking 2387928 pictures of them, I finally gave him a little bite. Needless to say, he loved it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen his eyes open so wide!

This recipe yields 6 muffins. I wouldn’t give Henry a whole muffin at once. I kept some in the fridge and a few in the freezer. They last about a week in the fridge, and 3 months in the freezer. I plan on stuffing some Kongs with muffin chunks to keep Henry busy, or even topping his meal with a small piece of muffin.

All in all, this was a fun and easy little activity I would do again! Actually, I also bought the dog cookie baking kit. Very excited to try the peanut and red dragonfruit cookies, I have a feeling they’ll be even easier than the muffins!

If you enjoy no-hassle baking for your dog, you’ll love these. You can find all the Snacúm Baking Kits here! I think I’ll be trying the mini pancakes next; they look absolutely adorable and scrumptious.
